Starlene has been working in the automotive sector for 15 years and as a tow truck driver for 1 ½ years.
What does your job entail?
I’m a service provider. I will give you a boost. I will unlock your vehicle doors. If you have a flat, I’ll come change it for you. If you run out of gas, I’ll bring you some. I’ll come and rescue you if you’ve swerved to miss an animal and have ended up in the ditch. Customer service is the nature of my job.
What type of environment do you work in?
I work outdoors. Yes I am driving a tow truck, but my actual work is outside in all of the elements: rain, sun, wind, snow, everything.
What attracted you to a career in the automotive sector?
My Dad. He always wanted me to excel and knew that I enjoyed driving. I was behind the wheel at a young age on a farm and knew that I’d eventually be doing something work related in something automotive.
What do you feel is the best way to prepare for a job in the automotive sector?
People should have a desire to be around autos all of the time and always want to be learning something new all of the time. I found my happiness in towing. I’m also a people person and I’m around people with every tow.
What kind of training would you recommend for a potential tow truck driver?
I’ve gone to Wreckmasters; they train you on the proper way of doing recoveries with proper equipment, as well as how to load properly and safely. It’s a wonderful course that teaches you a lot.
